Engineering Academics Network Annual Congress 2023: New Models

The 2023 Congress theme is New Models, embodied in the fabric of our host, NMITE, who welcome us toHereford from 12th to 14th June. The historic Hereford Cathedral – home of the Mappa Mundi – will host the public lecture on June 12th. Speaker to be announced shortly. NMITE's Building in the centre of Hereford NMITE's stunning and sustainable Skylon Campus, just a few minutes from the centre of the city, surrounded by the Herefordshire countryside.   The Annual Congress Dinner will be hosted at the Left Bank overlooking the River Wye in the shadow of the Cathedral.  

Featuring Vivienne Stern MBE, Chief Executive of Universities UK; The Rt Hon Jesse Norman MP, Minister of State (Decarbonisation and Technology); Rod Bristow, former CEO of Pearson UK; plus a host of expert speakers on theme including:

  • New models in recruitment
  • New models of delivery
  • New models in curriculum
  • New models in assessment
  • New models in employability
  • New models of academic employment and progression.
  • New models of funding

Tickets include a hands-on Blacksmith forging workshop, an NMITE welcome to their Blackfriar’s site and brand new Skylon campus, and Congress dinner, including the EPC Hammermen Student Award (accommodation is not included)

Who should attend?
Engineering academics at ALL levels of their career, from deans and heads of department to postgraduates. We recognise that being able to attend conferencesis integral for early career staff to develop their careers, therefore we are happy to provide you with heavily discounted tickets for Congress allowing you to ask questions, discover and share innovative ideas, and gain important advice fromyour peers and experienced professionals from a variety of engineering-related institutions.

Congress will allow you to network in-person and gain valuable insights into new models in engineering policy and practice in teaching, research and innovation – so be sure not to miss out.

Please see the full eligibility criteria below:

  • You must not have been employed in any academic post(s) for longer than a sum of five years.
  • Academics previously attending Congress on a free ECS place are not eligible for this offer (but can book a heavily discounted rate here).
  • The free place offer is for a full congress ticket plus congress dinner and optional basic B&B accommodation.
  • Travel and other expenses to attend are not included.
  • You will be expected to attend the whole of Congress.
  • Only one free place per member institution (non-member institutions are not eligible for this offer).
    Places will be offered on a first-come-first-served basis to those eligible for them.
  • Successful applicants will be expected to submit a brief report following their attendance.
  • Please note that if an individual if found not to be eligible, they will be responsible for the full Congress fee.

Help your students celebrate their success through the coveted EPC Hammermen Student Prize. There is a cash award of up to £500 and FIVE totally free places at the 2023 Engineering Academics Network Annual Congress up for grabs.

The prize celebrates the achievements of different engineering students at the EAN Annual Congress. Following the resounding student success at UWE in 2022, we will be showcasing the Hammermen Awards live as part of Congress 2023: New models. This is the big event in the EAN calendar.

Please encourage your students (undergraduate, postgraduate or KTP associate) to APPLY NOW by submitting a 100-word abstract for a poster on the theme(s) New models: making the world a better place (with a focus on ethic and sustainability). This might be something students are already working on for their final year project, or something from within their engineering studies which has really inspired them.

The deadline for applications (just a 100 word pitch) is Friday 17th March.

The deadline for full poster submission will be Thursday 20th April.

  • 15 longlisted entries will be selected to submit full posters to the Annual Congress. These will be displayed throughout Congress at NMITE’s brand new Skylon camplus.
  • 5 poster finalists will be invited – at the EPC’s expense – to attend the full Congress at NMITE in Hereford and present their posters;
  • At least 1 winner will be announced during the Annual Congress Dinner at the wonderful Left Bank, on Tuesday 13th June. The award and the £500 prize fund will be presented by The Incorporation of Hammermen of Glasgow on the night.

The Engineering Professors’ Council represents the academic engineers in the UK, with most university engineering faculties as members comprising an Engineering Academics Network of over 7,500 academic staff. EPC offer the authoritative voice of engineering departments’ interests to key audiences such as funders, influencers, employers, professional bodies and government. The EPC has an impactful web presence and an active lobbying community.
